LONDON, Britain (CNN) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was admitted on Monday to intensive care after his health deteriorated due to an emerging coronavirus, a British Prime Minister spokesman said.
A government spokesman said in a statement explaining Johnson’s condition: “Since Sunday evening, the Prime Minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, after symptoms of the Corona virus continue to appear.”
A British government spokesman continued, “This afternoon, the Prime Minister worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he was transferred to the intensive care unit of the hospital.”
The British official added, “The Prime Minister requested Foreign Minister Dominic Rapp, who is the first foreign minister, on his behalf when necessary.” He stressed that Johnson was receiving excellent medical care, and thanked the Health Services Authority, appreciating the efforts of its workers.
Later, the British government said, in a statement, that Secretary of State Dominic Rapp would take over from Johnson as “necessary”, as the most senior cabinet minister after Johnson.
Earlier, the British government said: “Rapp” will take over if Johnson is unable to lead the country.
Johnson had announced earlier Monday that he was hospitalized on Sunday on the advice of his doctor after continuing symptoms of Corona, to perform some tests that he described as “routine” and indicated that he had a high morale and was communicating with government members to confront the Corona virus.
